Son of DaveExpect a fusion of funk vocal-patterns with divergent rhythm-and-blues riffs and New Orleans atmosphereThe conspicuous songs of Son Of Dave stem from a real ache to conquer a guitar dominated world of music with his raucous harmonica playing. p.s. SON OF DAVE "Chicago is famous for its dark, dangerous out-of- the-way blues dungeons, where the music invokes a synesthesia hologram of funky despair and the air is hot with excitement and the scent of Japanese businessmen. It was in just such a dive, a little hole-in-the-wall called Electrical Audio Studio B where I first encountered Son of Dave, blowing a hot electric harp and keeping time with a back porch digital looping delay..." Steve Albini (December 2010) Following on from Son of Dave's critically acclaimed 2008 album '03' the notorious genre- alchemist returns with his latest offering 'Shake A Bone' recorded and mixed by Steve Albini in Chicago. Due for UK release on March 22nd 2010 via Kartel on CD, vinyl and download. The celebrated fusion of funk vocal-patterns with divergent rhythm-and-blues riffs and New Orleans atmosphere are relit for a fourth time under Benjamin Darvill's moniker Son of Dave. The conspicuous songs of Darvill stem from a real ache to conquer a guitar dominated world of music with his raucous harmonica playing. Fuelled along by vocal beat-boxing, foot stomping and a medley of improvised percussion. The Son of Dave imagination concocts a wholly modern yet timeless sound reminiscent only of Son of Dave. Like any album made from passion it's as rough only as much as Son of Dave wants it to be, with moments of sonic disorder, verbosely outrageous uses of the harmonica, and others of pure, rhythmically controlled homages to big-band swing. It's not meant to be easily filed in your record collection, instead sit beside it like a noncompliant child, still working out what it wants to be while challenging its elders at every new acrobatic arrangement. Of course the philosophy is best expressed through Son of Dave himself, who has written his own introduction letter to the record. Self-produced by Benjamin Darvill, 'Shake A Bone' is, like all Son of Dave material, written to be devoured by its listener; not dissected or deliberated on. It's a classic piece of pop not made to any recognisable model, but with a strict agenda to be a piece of dusty blues you can gladly dance to in downstairs jazz bars or sunny Hyde Park gatherings. The album is out on March 22nd, and a full UK and European tour to accompany the release will be announced in January 2010. No other female fronted band has ever beaten Blondie with their string of hits and run of success! |||||
Following the success of 2009's LOL Comedy Club, 2010 sees The Brook playing host to the monthly Thursday night comedy event, which showcases some of the finest comedy talent established in the UK as well as introducing some of the dynamic rising stars of these shores. Michael Smiley.DOUR-FACED Irish comedian Michael Smiley has been amusing, informing and entertaining punters for nearly 20 years. He first broke into public in 1993, when he took the runners-up slot in the prestigious So You Think You're Funny new act competition at the Edinburgh Festival. Michael Smiley has since become a popular and regular face at Edinburgh as well as spreading his wings to become a favourite at all the major clubs and comedy festivals at home and around the globe. Born in Belfast in 1963, Michael Smiley uses his experiences of growing up in Northern Ireland during the troubles to good effect, proving that, in the right hands, even terrorism can be funny. His quietly unassuming Belfast drawl and hangdog appearance, makes the audience listen to everything Michael has to say and boy do they appreciate it. An anecdotal comic, Michael Smiley ploughs a fertile furrow of amusing material from both his own childhood and that of his children with wife Miranda. Also the master of the one-liners, delivered in a disarmingly lateral style, Michael Smiley keeps his audience guessing his mix of the serious, the surreal and the stupendously funny. A cycle courier in a previous life (hence the constant look of fear), his doom laden and world-weary expression warms him to audiences from the word go, leaving them ready for the surprise of a sudden burst of anger when he vents his spleen at some incident from the past, the present or even the future.
Matt KirshenAt 26, Matt Kirshen's precision wit has already earned him an impressive reputation on the UK comedy circuit. His engagingly impish style is shot through with an intelligent and skillful talent that belies his youthful appearance, making him a firm favourite with audiences and fellow comedians alike. A fter a triumphant win at the 2003 Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition, Matt became an instant success on the the prestigious London and UK comedy circuit, a welcome regular at The Comedy Store, Jongleurs, The Glee, The Stand, Just The Tonic ,Belfast Empire, The Hyena, Jesters, Rawhide, Laughter House, Komedia, as well as university tours the length and breadth of the UK. He has performed to festival crowds at Glastonbury, Oxford Truck and The Carling Weekend in Reading and Leeds. "A rollercoaster of comedy genius" - The Scotsman.

|||||
Renowned for an action-packed pyrothechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. Attention to detail, playful audience interaction and that all important X-factor that leaves you with the feeling of witnessing the real thing have led to their performance being described as "beyond tribute", by both audience and critics alike. Following the enormous success of their ˜Live & Dangerous" & ˜Dedication" tours, the band embarked upon their "Into the Limelight" 2008 tour to tie in with their appearance on an episode of BBC2's 'Arena' documentary series of the same name. The tour travelled as far as a headline slot at the Rhodes Rock festival in Greece, and the Virgin Atlantic Music festival in Barbados. The band appeared alongside diverse world music acts, and played a Thin Lizzy set representing the celtic rock genre. Their latest tour continues to explore and celebrate the artistic and musical legacy of the hard-living, hard-rocking, yet at times surprisingly tender and romantic artist that was Philip Lynott. Expect more of the Celtic influenced tracks like "Whisky in the Jar" and "Black Rose", amongst the usual razzamatazz and classic tracks "The Boys are Back in Town", "Sarah" and many others we've come to expect from one of the most highly rated acts on the circuit. "Limehouse Lizzy's Wayne Ellis, an uncanny ringer for Phil Lynott..." |

Max Cavalera - throat & guitar The Soulfly tribe is once again on the warpath.
Since their Gold-certified, self-titled debut in 1997, Soulfly have remained one of the genre's most consistently brutal outfits. From the moment Max Cavalera left Sepultura to form Soulfly, he's remain With Conquer, Soulfly take no prisoners. Max explains, "It's definitely Soulfly's most battle-ready record by far. The vibe reminds me of movies like Gladiator and 300. It comes from a completely different place." The assault kicks off from the first note of "Bood Fire War Hate," and it doesn't stop until the end of closing instrumental, "Soulfly VI," which is a time-honored tradition the marks the close of each Soulfly album. Starting with "Blood fire War Hate," Max made a conscious decision to come out of the gates with all guns blazing, proclaiming, "I'm excited to open the record with a fast song. Usually Soulfly albums begin mid-tempo, but this reminds me of Beneath the Remains. This song also has one of the biggest hooks I've ever done. I can close my eyes and picture huge festival crowds singing it. When the fast part comes in, it's just war." Soulfly's previous albums featured guest appearances by notables, including Chino Moreno of Deftones, Sean Lennon, and Slipknot's Corey Taylor over the years. In the spirit of that collaborative tradition, Conquer sees Max with Throwdown's Dave Peters on the standout track, "Unleash," and with Morbid Angel's David Vincent on "Blood Fire War Hate." On "Unleash," Peters and Max create a corrosive chorus that isn't easily forgotten. Max says, "It's the closest thing I've done to Pantera. Dave put some killer lyrics to the music. The fast part at the end is my favorite part on the album." Firing off a throat-slicing riff and catchy hook, "Unleash" impacts like a wrecking ball. About working with underground metal hero Vincent, Max exclaims, "His screaming on that song was off the wall! To work with David was a trip. The song's a full assault, and it feels really natural. It's got that uncompromising attitude." Soulfly is truly a world music-inspired collective and the writing and recording process often sees Cavalera globetrotting for atypical inspiration. For Soulfly's fifth album, Dark Ages, saw Max travel to five locations to record, but for Conquer, a trip to Egypt was all he needed. He says, "I like to mix cultures. The other Soulfly albums were more Eastern European-flavored. Sepultura was more Brazilian. Egypt has a big chunk of influence on Conquer. We visited 'The City of the Dead' while we were in Egypt. It's a cemetery where families still live near their dead. That was crazy, creepy and wild. I didn't know the Cairo trip was going to affect the album as much as it did." The eerie, tribal outro of "For Those About to Rot" was a direct result of the trip, as Max recorded it live by the Nile. It's a strange transition that heightens the musical tension. "By the Nile River, there was this crazy gypsy band playing killer music," Cavalera recalls. "I happened to have my recorder so I recorded them and made an interlude out of their performance. It felt so authentic to have that outro—like old Sepultura. I'd rather the record sounds live than use a sound library from the Internet. That outro is subtle. I've been making records for so long, and I finally found the perfect balance between brutality and experimentation." Therefore, Conquer is a truly organic sonic experience. Max also sculpted a head-spinning trip into psychedelic metal territory with "Touching the Void." Stretching past the seven-minute mark, the song oozes classic Sabbath sludge, while incorporating entrancing dub flourishes. For Max, that track's extremely important. "Honestly, it's a thank you to Black Sabbath for being Black Sabbath. It's slow doom metal," he says. On the track, Max also collaborated with French dub artist Fedaya Pacha. Of the experience, Max says, "Fedaya makes dark, really heavy dub—completely different from commercial dub. He did the outro for 'Touching the Void,' and he played a lot of weird instruments. Those little things definitely make this song special when you listen to it." In the end, Conquer, just like every note of music he's ever produced, comes from Cavalera's heart. He eschews studio trickery and computerized flourishes in favor of straightforward instrumentation and real world experimentation. "I do this for the love of music," he says. "We could use the tools of the market to make a commercial record and sell more, but I wouldn't be as happy inside. I made the choice, and we aren't going down the easy road. We're going down the fucked up road, but that's the road that we know." With that sincerity, there's no doubt that Max and company will conquer all roads ahead. |

Oli Brown |
|
Such hallowed connections only serve to reaffirm the belief, that for many, Oli is the most promising Blues man to emerge from Britain in a long time. Not only a guitar prodigy but also a singer, songwriter and consummate performer. This is a young man who shows total dedication to the genre he loves. In late 2006, whilst playing at jam sessions, Oli met Simon Dring, a superb drummer and Fred Hollis, a highly talented bass player. It was during these sessions, finding that not only did they get on well musically, but also as friends, that Oli asked both Fred and Simon to join him in The Oli Brown Band. March 2007 was the start of their live gigs. Paul Jones saw and heard the potential and invited The Oli Brown Band, to do a live session for his BBC Radio 2 show. The session was aired May 14 2007 and received rave reviews. Oli went back to play in the States during July and August of 2007 (guesting with the American Blues band, Blinddog Smokin') there he hit the Mid West with his young British Blues and built up his reputation even more. In November 2007, The Oli Brown Band was selected by "Blues in Britain" to perform at the 24th International Blues Convention in Memphis, Tennessee. Oli and his band were the ONLY UK act to be chosen to represent Britain at this prestigious event !! In February 2008, Oli was invited to record at Ardent Studios, Memphis, by John Fry himself, not only to cut a couple of tracks, but also to have The Oli Brown Band record a live session for their "Ardent Session" (a weekly radio transmission). An honour indeed and not taken for granted. It is worth pointing out that The Oli Brown Band live session had over 1.4 million hits (YES ! 1.4 million !) in three weeks ! Oli signed to the major Blues label, Ruf Records, in January 2008 and went into the studio (with Fred and Simon) in March 2008 to cut the tracks for his first official album "OPEN ROAD"(consisting of 8 original tracks and 3 great covers), it was released in June 2008 and has received excellent reviews. Here are just a few of the UK reviews for "Open Road" "has the Blues under his fingernails" Classic Rock 2008 had The Oli Brown Band gigging extensively and included supporting artists such as Johnny Winter, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Devon Allman's Honeytribe, Jon Cleary and Buddy Whittington. Oli spent the month of August gigging in America, alongside Sherman Robertson, Miss Blues, Billy Branch and Blinddog Smokin'. In 2008 Oli secured endorsements from Hofner, Fender, Vanquish and Ernie Ball. Ecstatic reviews here, Europe and in America, only go to show that this young British singer, songwriter and musician has a great future ahead of him. Haven't seen Oli perform ? Here are some comments from people that have, "a great talent" John Mayall |
Joanne Shaw Taylor |
|
"Last year I heard something I thought I would never hear... a British White Girl playing blues guitar so deep and passionately it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!" (Dave Stewart/Eurythmics) When Dave Stewart had his big experience, Joanne Shaw Taylor was only 16. Her skills at the Telecaster were so perfect that the blues fan and Eurythmics-frontman asked her to join his supergroup D.U.P. to tour Europe in 2002. She was also offered a record contract but the label went bust. Today Joanne is 23 and happy about the fact that she took her time with the recording debut: "I wanted to take time out to really work on my craft and make sure that when I did an album it was the best that I could do." For White Sugar Joanne took a plane to Memphis where her label RUF had booked Jim Gaines' studio. Jim had worked with some of Joanne's idols like Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He brought in the experienced sessionmen Steve Potts (drums) and Dave Smith (bass). "Working with these guys was totally easy. I knew of them because of Luther Allison and Jonny Lang's albums. They didn't know the tracks until five minutes before we recorded them. I made them listen to the songs once and then play them. It was fantastic. They got so much feeling and soul. They are amazing guys to work with." The power trio - that's the kind of band which suits Joanne Shaw Taylor, are also at home in Birmingham, where she and her trio play the pubs, clubs and festivals. "I always wanted to try the power trio thing, like Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Paladins or Jimi Hendrix. I thought it would bring me on as a guitar player and a singer - which I think it has done. And" - Joanne chuckles - "it's also cheaper, you know."
White Sugar is the proof. The confident and young British woman keeps the traditions of her idols but she is going her own way. With her record debut she demonstrates her talent with ten songs that she has written herself. Playing the hard stuff à la SRV, making us feel the bite of her Telecaster just like Albert Collins did or working out charming little riffs from the Jimi Hendrix book - Joanne is always seeking - and finding - new terrain. Funky shuffles, soulful ballads or the hypnotic hookline of the title track, a burning instrumental, she presents her craft powerfully. Some songs were written during the flight to Memphis, a few others were written 10 years ago and are kind of her signature tunes. There is the autobiographical Kiss The Ground Goodbye, deep feelings come wirh Heavy Heart or Blackest Day, a song that Joanne wrote when she was 14. "With Blackest Day I really wanted to show my influences." She can be proud of her first album." "She's my pride & joy..." SRV once sang. Her fans will be proud of Joanne, too... "She plays with more attitude and flare than most. Massive potential here. Inspiring." "Catch her live if you can, then you can say: I was there at the beginning" "Joanne IS the new face of the blues" |

'The lead singer not only sounds like Marc Bolan but is an unnerving physical reincarnation. They play with a passion that lifts their performance above imitation' 'T.Rextasy's impeccably worked routine must have spooked the parade who came to pay tribute.' In the past 12 months there have been appearances on national TV in Australia (including a one hour live concert broadcast), France, Finland, Sweden and the UK (including Later with Jools Holland). The track 'Shine On' from the 2006 album Diamond Days garnered strong airplay in the US on Triple A format stations. 'Shine On' has also been used as the opening theme for the BBC drama series Sea Of Souls. BBC Radio 2, the UK's largest radio station, supported Eric with several prime-time interviews and extensive airplay. Diamond Days has become the biggest selling album of the Eric's lengthy career, receiving universal critical acclaim. The album entered both Australian (National) and US charts (Blues). Adding another string to his guitar, Eric is currently scoring the film 'Gospel Hill' starring Danny Glover and Samuel L. Jackson. Eric was born In New York into a musical family. Eric's father, Leon Bibb, was a trained singer who sang in musical theatre and made a name for himself as part of the 1960's New York folk scene. His uncle was the world famous Jazz pianist and composer John Lewis, of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Family friends included Pete Seeger, Odetta and actor/singer/activist Paul Robeson, Eric's godfather. Eric was given his first steel guitar aged seven. Growing up surrounded by talent, Eric recalls a childhood conversation with Bob Dylan, who, on the subject of guitar playing advised the 11-year-old Eric to "Keep it simple, forget all that fancy stuff". By Junior High School, Eric was consumed by music. "I would cut school and claim I was sick" said Bibb. "When everyone would leave the house I would whip out all the records and do my own personal DJ thing all day long, playing Odetta, Joan Baez, The New Lost City Ramblers, Josh White." At 16 years old, Eric's father invited him to play guitar in the house band for his TV talent show "Someone New". Eric's early guitar heroes were from his father's band, and included Bill Lee, (father of director Spike) who appeared on Eric's album Me To You, years later. In 1969, Bibb played guitar for the Negro Ensemble Company at St. Mark's place in New York and went on to study Psychology and Russian at Columbia University. "After a while it just didn't make much sense at all. I didn't understand why I was at this Ivy League School with all these kids who didn't know anything about what I knew about." Aged 19, Eric left for Paris, where a meeting with guitarist Mickey Baker focused his interest in blues guitar. When he later moved to Sweden, Bibb found a creative environment which took him back to Greenwich Village during the heyday of the folk revival. Settling in Stockholm, Bibb immersed himself in pre-war blues and continued to write and perform. "I began meeting and playing with local musicians as well as newcomers from all over the world. There was a budding world Music scene going on before it became a market concept." The album Good Stuff was released in 1997 on Opus 3 and American label Earthbeat! and led to Eric signing to the British based Code Blue label. Eric's only release on Code Blue was Me to You, featuring appearances from some of Bibb's personal heroes in Pops and Mavis Staples, and Taj Mahal (who also worked with Bibb on the Grammy-nominated children's record, Shakin' A Tailfeather). The album furthered Bibb's international reputation and was followed by tours of the UK, USA, Canada, France, Sweden and Germany. In the late 90's Eric joined forces with his then manager Alan Robinson, to form Manhaton Records, in Britain. The albums Home to Me (1999), Roadworks (2000) and Painting Signs (2001) followed, as did another Opus 3 release, Just Like Love. A Family Affair - The first ever album recorded together by father and son - Leon & Eric Bibb. Natural LightthenFriends - 15 tracks featuring Eric duetting with friends and musicians he has met on his travels such as Taj Mahal, Odetta, Charlie Musselwhite, Guy Davis, Mamadou Diabate and Djelimady Toukara Eric has appeared on major TV and radio shows including Later with Jools Holland and The Late Late Show. Eric and his band have played at most of the world's major festivals including Glastonbury (twice) and the Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK. He joined Robert Cray on two U.S. tour stints in 2001 and 2002 and opened for Ray Charles in the summer of 2002. Eric's talent for both performing and songwriting has been recognised with a Grammy Nomination (for Shakin' a Tailfeather) and 4 W.C.Handy nominations (for the albums Spirit andthe Blues and Home To Me; for 'Kokomo' as Best Acoustic Blues Song of the Year, and for Best Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year). His songs have featured on TV shows such as BBC TV's 'Eastenders' and "Casualty", and "The District" in the USA. Eric's version of "I Heard the Angels Singin'" was included in the feature film "The Burial Society" and Eric appears on Jools Holland's double platinum-selling album "Small World, Big Band", singing his own composition "All That You Are". In 2005 Eric released his latest album "Ship Called Love" and toured the world as ever, including a major US tour with John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers and Robben Ford. "Ship Called Love" has been nominated for Acoustic Album of the Year in the 2006 Blues Music Awards. "Eric is one of the new, young singers that has appeared on the scene that, much to my delight, has a great voice, is an excellent performer and has a great knowledge about the roots of this music" Taj Mahal "He sings as he doesn't even have a dachshund on his trail, creating some of the most untroubled-sounding blues this side of the Rev. Gary Davis. Bibb is just about stunning" Los Angeles Times. |
As a child growing up in Henley Megan was exposed to music at an early age watching her mother sing at nearby Nettlebed Folk Club and she developed an ear for a tune while listening at home to the likes of Abba and Queen. As she grew older she found inspiration from the songs of Bill Withers, Tracy Chapman, Bob Dylan, Anais Mitchell, Ralph McTell and Joan Armatrading, among others. Her first known appearance was on the Kenton Theatre stage at the Henley Youth Festival where she performed one of her own songs at the tender age of 9! As a teenager her songwriting skills continued to develop and she formed her own band "Megan and the Boys" honing her craft on the local live circuit. At eighteen she spent six months travelling where she paid her way playing guitar and singing to crowds in Venice, Thailand, India and Malaysia. It was during this time she fell in love with the people of Nepal and has since returned to Kathmandu twice to record with leading Nepalese musicians Nirmal Kulu, Binod Katal and Shyram Saram Nepali. Profits from her first single release were sent back to the charity "Child Action Nepal" to help the orphans of Kathmandu. Back in the UK, between songwriting and performing Megan regularly contributes to music therapy sessions for people with learning difficulties. These experiences have had a profound effect on her songwriting. Her powerful, poignant and often witty lyrics are woven around wonderful timeless pop melodies and demonstrate a depth and maturity far beyond her 21 years. Megan and her brother Joe, 16, (a hugely talented sax player) won this year's BBC RADIO 2 Young Folk Award beating off strong competition in the final at Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's Southbank. Megan has since begun work on her forthcoming debut album, "Making Waves". From these early recordings the debut single is taken; two wonderfully crafted songs featuring Peter Knight (Steeleye Span) on fiddle, Barriemore Barlow (Jethro Tull) on drums, Andy Crowdy on bass and Mollie Marriot (daughter of Steve) on BV's. Her vocal coach, the great Sam Brown also plays ukulele: "What Elliott Said" and "Shape & Colour". The first single was released in October through Redemption Records following a hectic summer festival schedule. Megan has performed at at THE CAMBRIDGE FOLK FESTIVAL and CROPREDY, the SECRET GARDEN PARTY, TOWERSEY VILLAGE FESTIVAL, WARWICK FOLK FESTIVAL, SIDMOUTH FOLK WEEK. |

Justin CurrieDel Amitri's singer / songwriter tours his 'The Great War' Album - released 3rd May"The best thing I've heard all year would have to be the Justin Currie album, his lyrical bent is often dark and mosaic, his style is sublime…" Chris Difford, Squeeze (Mojo interview 2008) |

When Del Amitri's singer / songwriter Justin Currie released his first solo album, What is Love For in 2007 he described it as 'eleven thunderously dreary dirges'! Fortunately, not everyone agreed with him and the album won accolades from critics, fans and fellow artists, as a thing of dark and starkly honest beauty. Now Currie returns with a second album The Great War, which delivers a bracing set of original compositions that break yet more creative ground – and should further cement Currie's place as an ambitious and versatile solo artist. The Great War finds Justin delivering some of his most compelling work to date, with such memorable numbers as "The Way That It Falls," "At Home Inside of Me" and the epic "The Fight to Be Human" overflowing with catchy melodicism and vivid wordplay, while "A Man With Nothing to Do" (released as a single on 26th April) "Can't Let Go of Her Now" and "You'll Always Walk Alone" offer a trenchant mix of romantic idealism and hard-won experience. "I didn't want to repeat what I'd done on What Is Love For," Currie states. "What Is Love For was intended as a very introspective record, and it was so sad and dark that I didn't really expect it to get any airplay. But The Great War is much brighter and more accessible; there are actually three or four positive love songs on there, which is unusual for me. This time, I wanted more major keys, and more variety in the tempos. I don't write a lot of up-tempo songs these days, so it took me a while to write enough to be able to get the kind of balance I wanted. "I also used the device of making little jokes out of the songs," he continues, "so quite a few of the songs on The Great War have punchlines that completely reverse the assumed meaning of the song. I find that enormously satisfying when it works. A famous poet, whose name I forget, said that a poem must always have a little revelation at the close—a quiet epiphany—and I see no reason why songs can't sometimes do the same. Why repeat to fade? Why not end on a handbrake turn, a slap in the face or a 'reveal'? I tried to make the entire album do this, so that the last line of the last song is an unmasking." Justin Currie has plenty of experience in defying musical expectations. He was still in his teens when he co-founded Del Amitri in his hometown of Glasgow. Between 1982 and 2002, the band evolved from resourceful D.I.Y. indie combo to international hitmakers, releasing six much-loved studio albums before amicably parting ways. "It's a big difference being a solo operator," Currie observes. "What you lose in companionship, support and input, you gain in creative control. But most of the elements of what I do haven't changed all that much. I'm still looking for melody and lyrics that I can feel something from, and trying to put them into the standard structures of the rock or pop song. I love those structures; to me, the verse/chorus/middle-eight thing still seems filled with endless unexplored possibilities." The Great War, which was recorded and mixed by frequent Del Amitri associate Mark Freegard, features Currie on lead vocals and various instruments, along with a talented group of players that includes ex-Del Amitri guitarist Mick Slaven. Currie considers the album's title to be "a nice broad and flexible metaphor," adding, "Album titles are hard; you have to find something non-specific that still somehow suits a collection of songs. I noticed a few common references to struggle and conflict in the lyrics. I don't think there's a single song on the album that the title doesn't resonate with in some way." The combination of uplifting tunes and darker lyrical themes has long been a recurring motif in Currie's songwriting. "Del Amitri were often described as 'bittersweet' for that very reason," he notes, adding, "Do I do this deliberately? I don't know. I am an enormous devotee of pop melodies, from Cole Porter to Amy Winehouse, Smokey Robinson to Buzzcocks. Lyrically, more often than not, I seem to gravitate towards the ambiguity of feelings, the struggle with motivations and doubt in relationships, self-loathing and disappointment—somber things sometimes, but with a scintilla of hope, or at least catharsis. As a songwriter, I use melody to make all of this less maudlin, hopefully, and to create tension." "I love to undermine a lyrical conceit with a contrasting tune," Currie asserts. "I like to sew doubt in the listener's mind. Does he mean these things? Is this song actually as melancholy, defeatist or cynical as it seems? Or is this guy a romantic who's optimistic about the consoling power of love?" "If I have a mission as an artist," he concludes, "it would be to get a little more poetry into the great warehouse of rock music. All I can do is get it out there and fight to be heard; that's the great war." Notes Justin Currie was the lead singer and bassist in Del Amitri, which he formed in Glasgow in 1982 with Iain Harvie. Del Amitri became an internationally successful band, with estimated record sales of 5 million plus, hit singles including 'Kiss This Thing Goodbye', 'Nothing Ever Happens', 'Always the Last to Know' and the US Top 10 hit 'Roll to Me'. Justin Currie is unmarried and lives a quiet life of standing up and sitting down in Scotland with his two pet television sets. |

Silver BeatlesSouthampton's Finest Beat Combo Our very own fab four return to their very own 'Cavern Club'. |
|
||||
The Daily Telegraph. There seems to be two different methods employed by tribute bands in copying their heroes. One is to immerse themselves totally in character, become the band. The other is to still do this, but do it with tongue very much in cheek. So how to interpret the greatest pop group of all time? The Silver Beatles go for option B, not taking themselves too seriously and this approach definitely works for them. They indulge in banter among themselves and with the crowd, making the most out of the fact that every Beatle is instantly recognisable. The first half of the gig is the young Beatles, suits and mop tops, covering all the early hits; 'Saw her standing there, Can't buy me love' among others before finishing on 'Twist and Shout'. Then it's a quick break and costume change where they miraculously transform into the older, hippie era Beatles; the period where they wrote some of their finest songs. Just point non-believers to songs like 'In my life' and 'Let it be' which show, more so than the early years, why the Beatles are still held in such esteem. Not that anyone here needed convincing. The 500 plus crowd, arms held aloft, nah-nah-nah-ing during the encore of 'Hey Jude'. Nope, no non-believers were present. Review by Thomas Christie |

Lee "Memphis" King, His Orchestra & SingersOutrageous Elvis ShowDon't miss this remarkable Elvis tribute show. It's like no other Elvis Presley show with the remarkable tribute artist Lee 'Memphis' King
|
|
||||
Lee Memphis King is a true Elvis fan and it is this genuine long felt love and respect for Elvis and his commitment to perform the closest tribute to the real thing which has led to his phenomenal success and which is reflected in the stunning performances that Lee Memphis King delivers. He pays meticulous attention to the way Elvis sings, to adopting the attitude and passion that Elvis expresses when performing and interpreting a song. Elvis's performances are lovingly and respectfully brought to life in every detail. Lee 'Memphis' King was officially declared the best Elvis Tribute Artist in the world at the prestigious 2005 Collingwood Elvis Festival held annually in Canada. This is attended by the top Elvis tribute artists from around the world and the judges' criteria for awarding this prestigious title are based on the authenticity of the voice, stage performance, appearance and adopting Elvis's personality and passion on stage. The ultimate accolade! In 2004 Memphis King played several UK Theatres including the London Palladium to critical acclaim and now, in this latest production, he portrays the entire performing career of Elvis.
In this latest production, Lee Memphis King portrays the entire performing career of Elvis Presley.: The show starts with the exciting early Rock 'n' Roll years which started in 1954 at Sun Records led by the legendary Sam Phillips. During this time with Sun Records and later with RCA, Elvis recorded and performed famous hit songs like 'Blue Suede Shoes, 'Hound Dog' and 'One Night' which Lee Memphis King sings with the same energy and passion of his idol. The incredible '68 Comeback Special,' a landmark in Elvis's career, is recreated faithfully and respectfully by Lee Memphis King and his incredible band. He recreates the opening songs of the 'Special' to the famous 'sit down' and finishes with an incredible rendition of 'If I Can Dream' to close the first half of the show The second half of the show is dedicated entirely to the 'Vegas Years' when Elvis would perform in Las Vegas and tour throughout the US and Canada - the definitive record of these performances are contained in his films 'Elvis - That's the Way It Is', 'Elvis On Tour' the 'Aloha from Hawaii' concert and 'Elvis in Concert' Accompanied by his top level orchestra and singers and wearing costumes which are accurate in every detail, Lee 'Memphis' King recreates it all with stunning authenticity - the voice and equally important for Lee, the passion and energy that Elvis put into his songs. He leaves audiences in no doubt that they are witnessing the world's No 1 Elvis Tribute Artist. Pure entertainment and Pure Presley. |

Passenger
Is there something he's hiding? "That I have a disturbed mind, you mean?" laughs Rosenberg. "No, not at all. Even my darkest songs have a sense of humour. The worst crime you can commit in pop is taking yourself too seriously. Passenger has its down tempo moments and some of our songs are quite sensitive, but they all share certain quirkiness. In the end, it's about storytelling - creating characters and sending them off on a journey." None of the songs are what you could call straight down the line, it's the juxtaposition of music and lyrics that tends to throw people. It's not unusual for an audience to leave with a bellyache from laughing and a red eye or two from crying - that is the measure of the hour-long rollercoaster that he captivates his crowds with. His current solo record strips the Passenger machine down to its bare running gear and, as you may expect, really exposes this storyteller's soul . . . Wide Eyes, Blind Love . . . 'nuff said. Passenger ,released their debut album Wicked Mans Rest in 2007 to great critical acclaim ,championed by Radio 1's Jo Whiley and Q magazine . In a very short space of time they have toured the US and Australia twice ,played V,Galstonbury,SXSW,Secert Garden & One Movement to name but a few of the international festival stages they have graced . . . I say they ,currently they have stripped right back to "their" bare bones and the current album finds lead singer songwriter 23 year old Mike Rosenberg playing by himself and totally baring his soul, a soul I should add that through consistent daily busking has sold over 8000 albums; in the last 6 months alone . . . An uncommon talent, with an uncommon ethic . . . who really does leave you with . . . Wide Eyes, Blind Love . . . |

Alabama 3 know all about being outsiders. They've taken an outlaw approach since the day they first emerged from the free party scene to combine acid house with country and western. Across four deeply infectious, darkly humoured, lysergically charged albums they've made impossible musical collision sound as natural as the swamp, They've cheated death on the road to bring one of the most exhilarating live shows ever to have emerged from rehab. They've dropped subversive politics into sweet country verses and delivered sermons of love to the Godless masses. They've enriched and inspired the chemically charged underground through their counter-cultural, proto-situationist pursuits and, despite of, or perhaps because of all this, they've even provided the theme to the profoundly paranoiac Mafia (outlaw) series "Sopranos". Oh yes, Alabama 3 may come on like Irvine Welsh's house band stalking the gutters of ghetto culture, but they infiltrate the corridors of the mainstream just as easily. Like any good counter-cultural, proto-situationist country and western techno outlaw band from Brixton in fact.

Soulfly's sixth offering for Roadrunner Records, Conquer, may very well be the musical equivalent of the movie Braveheart. The songs –much like the warriors in the film- channel raw, unbridled rage through a cacophony of thrash guitars, infectious grooves, tribal polyrhythms and Max Cavalera's unmistakable, thunderous roar. On this record, Soulfly unleash a metallic mayhem unlike anything they've done previously. Conquer shifts from unrelenting, precise speed metal to slow, brooding doom. Mark Rizzo's lead guitar rips with the precision of a smart bomb, while Bobby Burns grinds out volatile, chest-caving bass lines. Drummer Joe Nunez crushes behind the kit, forging a rhythmic background for all-out sonic war. Once again, it's the legendary Max Cavalera who stands at the eye of the storm, uniting the musical tribe and acting as its unofficial leader. His voice and guitar command the tribe into battle with each line and riff. Grab your war paint and prepare for the onslaught.
ed prolific. Four critically acclaimed albums and numerous world tours followed Soulfly's now-classic debut. In 2008, Max once again partnered with his brother Iggor in Cavalera Conspiracy, releasing Inflikted. At the same time, he managed to write and record Conquer. Produced by Max and mixed by Andy Sneap (Machine Head, Arch Enemy), the album spans a violent spectrum. Max comments, "After Cavalera Conspiracy, I wanted to write a stronger, uncompromised statement with Soulfly. What I [did] on this album is what I was aiming for. This is the Soulfly album that I've been trying to make for a long time." That's evident from the calculated rage and bludgeoning grooves that define songs like "Enemy Ghost" and "Rough."
Up until 2002, Oli Brown had never picked up a guitar, yet by 2006 (at just 16) he had toured in America, TWICE, opening for Blues royalty such as Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Taj Mahal, shared UK stages with Walter Trout, Paul Jones, Buddy Whittington and even the Godfather of British Blues, John Mayall.
"I have played with all sorts of blues musicians all over the world, I even made a film Deep Blues where I went to Mississippi and recorded with some legendary players such as R.L Burnside and Jesse-Mae Hemphill".
She talks about some influences. When Joanne was a little schoolgirl, she was caught by the rough side of the blues: SRV, Albert Collins, the Paladins, Jimi Hendrix. At Christmas she got her first electric guitar. The old classical guitar, which she had played since she was eight, vanished from the children's room. "As soon as I heard SRV and Albert Collins I knew pretty much that I wanted to do that full stop. That was the lifestyle route that I was going to go down. It was never a hobby. I was always very serious and dedicated to it."
Mick Slacker & Co's tounge in cheek tribute act just gets better and better.
T.Rextasy are the only band to have been authorised and endorsed by Marc Bolan's Catalogue Management, are now officially recognised as the world's No.1 group dedicated to the greatest glam rocker of them all, Marc Bolan of T.Rex. With their uncanny doppelganger lead singer and lead guitarist, Danielz, T.Rextasy perform a powerful and mesmerising presentation of Marc Bolan's rock and pop anthems.
Not many bands can count Radiohead, Portishead, Elvis Costello, Robert Wyatt, Ben Folds, Ewan McGregor and Nick Hornby amongst their admirers, but The Unthanks occupy a unique place in music. Northumbria sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank are unsentimental young storytellers outside of time, forging links between folk worlds old, new and other. Staunch traditionalism and sonic adventure ought to be polar opposites, yet they are easy bedfellows in the gentle hands of The Unthanks; the British counterpart to the leftfield folk leanings of Sufjan Stevens, Bonnie Prince Billy, Tom Waits and Fleet Foxes, nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and present in The Best Albums of the Decade (worldwide, all genres) in The Guardian and Uncut. Described by Britain's leading music journalist Paul Morley as "absolutely exquisite", new album Here's The Tender Coming employs a kaleidoscope of unlikely instruments and arrangements.
The Tennessee Three
"...Cover bands are big business these days, but this quartet are clearly a cut above most with suits, mop-tops and jerking stage manoeuvres all in place as they blast out 'From Me To You', 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Please, Please Me' with note-perfect aplomb."
Lee Memphis King saw one of Elvis's films - 'Roustabout' - when he was only a few years old and has loved the man and his music from that day on. Even as a child he found himself imitating Elvis's voice and as he grew up this became an overwhelming obsession to perfect Elvis's voice and to recreate the excitement and passion that Elvis himself put into every performance. He says: "To me Elvis was the greatest performer and vocalist of the last century and I constantly strive for perfection when I perform his songs."
Lee Memphis King is the producer and director of a serious production and tribute to the greatest entertainer of the last century, Elvis Presley.
Passenger is Mike Rosenberg, a singer songwriter with a very different take on pop. The 23-year-old founder pens unsettling songs about stalking, wasted lives and the despair of abandoned dogs, all with an alarming eye for detail.
Formed in Southampton in September of 2003, The Warm are fiercely built a following throughout the U.K thanks to their dynamic live performances which showcase their emotive rock melodies and catchy pop hooks. Fans reaching as far as The U.S and Australia have given The Warm the incentive to keep on writing and performing, knowing their music is creating a positive international response.
